Nurse’s Office

School Policies

MAY WE REMIND PARENTS THAT SCHOOL IS NOT THE PLACE FOR AN ILL CHILD.

A child who has had a fever should not return to school until his/her temperature has been normal for 24 hours without fever reducing medicines. If a child has been ill during the night (i.e., vomiting, diarrhea, fever, excessive cough), we ask that you keep him/her home the following day to rest and evaluate for further sickness.

Parents are notified in writing of any communicable disease in school.

Vision and hearing screening will be given to each child in the month of November for grades 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th during the school year. The school nurse will contact you and discuss if there are any concerns with your child.

MEDICATIONS: Any medications that are to be given to students during the school day are to be sent in the prescription container and dropped off at the front desk or health office. If the medication will be for more than a few days, a special form needs to be filled out by your child’s doctor. Prescription medications will be kept in a locked cabinet and dispensed by the Health Aide. NO MEDICATIONS WILL BE DISPENSED TO STUDENTS (including aspirin, antihistamines, cough drops, cough syrup, etc.) WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM THE PARENTS AND/OR DOCTOR. Included with that we must have in writing, the reason for medication, date to begin and end, exact dosage, time(s) of day.

We ask that the principal’s office be informed of special health needs for individual children at the beginning of the school year or upon enrollment.

If your child cannot participate in Phy Ed, please send a note to that effect, preferably from the doctor.

Covid 19 Quarantine for Positive Cases:

  • Stay home for 5 days returning on day 6. Counting day 1 when symptoms started.
  • If you continue to feel sick by day 6, please stay home until feeling better or fever free for 24 hr without using fever reducing medication.
  • Optional mask wearing when you return on day 6, we are not enforcing mask wearing at OLL.

Seasonal Influenza:

  • Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel.
  • Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
  • Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or do not have signs of a fever, without using fever-reducing medications. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
  • Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. Sick children will be placed in the health office while awaiting the arrival of a parent or another approved adult who may take them home.
